Lions for early intervention for blind and visually Impaired children

District 129 – Slovenia

Project Purpose and Background

The project “Lions for Early Intervention for Blind and Visually Impaired Children”, launched in April 2017, addresses a critical gap in the support system for young children (aged 0–6) with visual impairments in Slovenia.

International experience emphasizes the importance of early, comprehensive, and child-centered intervention, preferably provided in the child’s home environment. In Slovenia, however, such support has been primarily delivered on an outpatient basis in Ljubljana, placing a considerable burden on families from across the country. One specialist is responsible for around sixty children, while a psychologist and a social worker support parents. The government funds only one staff position, while costs for equipment, appropriate facilities, professional training, and travel and accommodation are left to the families.

Final Activities and Achievements

Over the years, the project has developed successfully, despite challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. All activities were carefully planned and implemented with special consideration for protecting vulnerable participants.

A major milestone was the renovation of unused spaces at the IRIS Institute, completed in the spring of 2021. In the final phase, with support from ALC, we purchased and installed all necessary furniture and equipment for the renovated spaces: a kitchen, a living room, and a bedroom. These improvements created a more homely and supportive environment for children and their families during therapy sessions.

The project, with a total value of €24,000, was successfully completed. We sincerely thank all ALC members for their generous support of this important humanitarian initiative.

Together we can do more!
